Age of War 2 is a base-defense strategy game and the sequel to the original Age of War: you and an AI opponent each control a base at opposite ends of the screen, and the fight is won by whichever side breaks through first. Every unit you train marches on its own toward the enemy base and fights whatever it runs into along the way, so your job is less about direct control and more about deciding what to spend on and when.
Killing enemy units earns you two things: coins, which pay for more troops and turrets, and XP, which evolves your civilization into the next age. Evolving is the real engine of a match — it swaps your cavemen and rock-throwers for knights, then riflemen, then something stranger, and an army that's one age behind starts losing fights it should win. The tug-of-war rhythm of pushing, holding, and timing your evolutions is what carries a session, not any single clever move.
Controls
Everything runs off the mouse. Click a unit icon on your HUD to train that troop, and click an open turret slot near your base to build a turret there — you get up to four slots, and you can sell an outdated turret to make room for a stronger one. No keyboard is needed.
Tips
- Don't spend every coin on troops the moment you have them — hold back enough to evolve as soon as you can. A fresh age is worth more than a few extra units of the old one.
- Keep all four turret slots filled. An open slot is free damage you're leaving on the table, but sell a turret before it's fully obsolete rather than after.
- Save your special attack for when you're being overrun or the enemy is about to evolve — used on an early, weak wave it does almost nothing.
- Mix your unit types. Sending only one kind of troop lets the enemy's defense counter it completely; a mixed push is much harder to stop.
It's a single-player match against the computer, not another player, so it's a good fit for anyone who wants a short, self-contained strategy session rather than a long-term competitive game.
