What is Yokai Dungeon?

Yokai Dungeon is a fast-paced, grid-based action game where you explore endless randomized rooms, dodging and squashing colorful ghosts. Originally created by the talented pixel artists at Neutronized, you start out as a little tanuki and must push heavy blocks around to crush incoming enemies. The mix of Sokoban-style puzzle solving and reflex-heavy combat makes every room feel like a frantic arcade challenge.

Instead of typical weapons, your main form of attack is grabbing statues, pots, or blocks and launching them forward to squash the yokai. If a ghost gets trapped against a wall by a sliding block, they pop into coins which you can spend in the shop room. You will need quick thinking to herd the enemies into a line and take them out with one satisfying throw before they corner you.

Controls

Movement and attacking are kept simple, relying mostly on directional inputs:

• Arrow Keys / WASD: Move your character around the grid
• Spacebar / Z / K: Interact, grab, and push blocks in the direction you are facing

Tips

• Keep moving: The action happens in real-time. Enemies float around and will chase you, so you must constantly reposition to avoid getting boxed in.
• Stack your kills: Wait for multiple yokai to line up before pushing a block. Crushing two or three enemies with a single slide yields combo coins.
• Use different blocks: Not all blocks behave the same. Some shatter on impact, while others keep sliding until they hit a wall.
• Save coins for hearts: The merchant room sells health upgrades, which are absolutely essential before tackling the tricky boss rooms.

Whether you want a quick arcade session or a longer dungeon crawling challenge, Yokai Dungeon is a charming and surprisingly intense action game. Its adorable pixel art masks a tricky test of reflexes and spatial awareness.
