About The Floor Is Lava

This browser game takes the "floor is lava" idea and turns it into a fast vertical climb: reach the goal at the top of the screen before your 40-second clock runs out. Points drain every second you spend hesitating, so the fastest, most confident run wins — not the safest one.

Falling into the lava doesn't just cost you a life, it stops the clock outright and zeroes your score, so a single mistimed jump near the end can undo an otherwise clean climb. Once you reach the top (or fall), you can enter your name to see how you rank on the high score list.

Controls

  • Spacebar — jump
  • Left / A — move left
  • Right / D — move right
  • Up / W — slow your fall
  • P — pause

Tips

  • Use Up/W to slow a fall when you've misjudged a jump — it's often enough to save a run that would otherwise end in the lava.
  • Since every second costs points, don't stop to plan mid-climb; scan the next couple of platforms while you're still moving.
  • A near-miss with the lava is still better than playing it safe and eating point deductions — the clock punishes hesitation more than it punishes small risks.

Runs are short, so it's an easy game to fire off between things — just climb, don't touch the lava, and try to beat your last time.

The Floor Is Lava FAQ

What happens if I fall into the lava?
Your clock stops immediately and your score is reduced to zero, so a fall late in a good run costs you everything you'd earned.
How is my score calculated?
You start with points from the 40-second clock, and points are deducted for every second that passes, so a faster climb scores higher than a slow, cautious one.
What does the Up/W key do?
It slows your fall speed in mid-air, which is useful for recovering from a mistimed jump before you land in the lava.
Can I see how I rank against other players?
Yes, after each run you can enter your name and check the high score list to compare your best time against other players.
