About Recoil

Recoil is a quirky physics-based platformer created by Martin Magni where your only method of movement is the kickback from your own weapon. You cannot walk or jump; instead, you have to fire your gun in the opposite direction of where you want to go. Your main objective in every level is to eliminate all the nasty pink viruses scattered around the map while avoiding deadly spikes and bottomless pits.

The game features over 80 levels that constantly introduce new mechanics and layouts. Every few stages, you are handed a different type of weapon—from standard pistols to shotguns, miniguns, and even lasers—which drastically changes how you move and approach the puzzles. Managing your momentum and ammo becomes crucial as the difficulty ramps up.

Controls

  • Mouse / Touch: Click or tap anywhere on the screen to shoot. The direction you shoot determines your recoil trajectory.

Tips

  • Master your momentum: Small, controlled shots are often better than rapid firing. Rapid fire can easily send you flying uncontrollably into spikes.
  • Understand your weapon: Different guns have different recoil strengths. The shotgun provides a massive burst of movement, while the minigun requires sustained fire to hover.
  • Use walls to brake: If you are flying too fast towards a hazard, shooting the wall you are approaching can slow you down, or simply use the environment to bounce and stop.
  • Watch for patterns: The pink viruses sometimes move in predictable patterns. Time your shots so you land safely after taking them out.

Recoil FAQ

How do I move in Recoil?
You move entirely by shooting your weapon. The recoil pushes you in the opposite direction of your shot, meaning you have to aim away from where you want to go to propel yourself forward.
How many levels are in Recoil?
The game features over 80 levels. The levels are broken up into different stages that introduce new weapons with entirely different recoil mechanics.
Who created Recoil?
Recoil was created by independent developer Martin Magni, the creator of other popular puzzle games like Mekorama, Drive Mad, and the Fancade platform.
