Swords and Sandals is the turn-based gladiator game that started the whole Whiskeybarrel Studios series. You build a fighter, send them into the arena one match at a time, and spend the gold you win on better gear and training. There's no reflex test here — every fight is a sequence of choices, and a well-planned build beats a lucky click.
You start by creating your gladiator: pick a look, then divide starting skill points across the different combat styles. From there it's a loop of fight, collect gold, shop, repeat. Beat enough opponents in a row and you work your way up to the seven Arena Champions waiting at the top of the ranks.
Controls
Mouse only. Click the icons around your gladiator to choose attacks, blocks and special moves during a fight, and click through menus to shop and level up between matches.
Tips
- Don't spread your skill points too thin early on — a couple of strong combat skills beat a little bit of everything.
- Check the Armory and Smithy after every win. New gear becomes available as you level up, and better equipment matters more than raw stats in close fights.
- Watch your opponent's pattern for a round or two before committing to an aggressive combo — blocking a big hit is often worth more than landing one.
It's a good fit if you like slower, plan-it-out combat over twitch action, and don't mind grinding gold between rounds to gear up for the next Champion.
