About Classic Hearts

Classic Hearts is a traditional trick-taking card game that has challenged tactical minds and tested friendships for generations. Unlike most card games where high cards are a pathway to victory, Hearts turns the rules upside down. Your main objective is to avoid winning tricks that contain penalty cards—specifically, any Heart card or the dreaded Queen of Spades. Winning these cards adds points to your score, and in this game, the player with the lowest score wins.

Every hand begins with a critical passing phase where you choose three cards from your hand to give to an opponent, receiving three cards from another in return. This mechanic allows you to offload dangerous high cards or strategically shape your hand. Once the play begins, players must follow the suit led if they can. The tension builds with every trick, as players attempt to bleed suits, flush out high cards, and avoid getting stuck with the heavy 13-point penalty of the Queen of Spades.

Controls

Play is straightforward and entirely mouse-driven. Simply click or tap the cards in your hand to select them during the passing phase, and click or tap a card to play it during your turn. The clean interface allows you to focus completely on card counting and outsmarting your opponents.

Tips for Winning

  • Short-suit your hand: During the passing phase, try to pass all cards of a single suit, such as Clubs or Diamonds, to void that suit in your hand. This allows you to discard high Hearts or the Queen of Spades on earlier tricks when players lead that suit.
  • Flush out the Queen: If you hold high Spades like the Ace or King but not the Queen, lead lower Spades to force players to play theirs. This helps draw the Queen of Spades out of hiding before you are forced to take a trick with your high Spades.
  • Watch for moon shooters: Pay close attention if a player is winning all the point tricks in a round. To prevent them from Shooting the Moon and giving everyone else 26 points, you should intentionally win a low-value Heart trick to disrupt their sweep.

Classic Hearts FAQ

How do you win in Classic Hearts?
The game ends when any player reaches 100 points. The player with the lowest total score at that moment is the winner.
What is Shooting the Moon?
Shooting the Moon is a high-risk strategy where you deliberately win all 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades in a single round. If successful, you receive 0 points while all other players are penalized with 26 points.
In which direction do you pass cards?
In the first round, you pass three cards to the player on your left. In the second round, you pass to the right. In the third round, you pass to the player across from you. The fourth round is a hold round with no passing. This cycle repeats throughout the game.
